On Rua dos Bacalhoeiros, the old “Stockfish Merchant Street” not far from the Tagus, there is a shop that looks as if someone forgot to lock it—in the best possible way. The counter, shelves, and the small office of Conserveira de Lisboa date back to the 1930s and remain unchanged to this day. Anyone who enters is confronted by walls of colorful printed tin cans, stacked tightly together up to the ceiling.

It all began in 1930 as Mercearia do Minho, a colonial goods store that specialized in canned goods from the very start. Fernando da Silva Ferreira joined the company as an employee, earned shares, and eventually took over the business. In 1942, he gave it the name it still bears today: Conserveira de Lisboa.

The big years came in the 1960s and 70s, when Portuguese canned goods went all over the world and the company needed two additional warehouses. In 1988, Fernando handed over the business to his son Armando José Cabral Ferreira and his wife Regina Maria; in 2004, the family bought back all the shares. Since 2008, the grandchildren, Tiago and Maria Manuel Ferreira, have been running the business in the third generation—from the very same counter.

Conserveira does not produce its own products. It is something that holds a special place in Portugal: the house that selects the canned goods. Three private labels bring this selection together—Tricana for the classic canned sardines, mackerel, and tuna in olive oil; Minor for the smaller, boldly seasoned specialties; and Prata do Mar as a third line. The recipes have evolved over decades and are deliberately not modernized: whole fillets, pure olive oil, no shortcuts. Today, the cans are exported to 27 countries.

This is exactly why Conserveira is such an important partner to us: a family business in its fourth generation that knows its suppliers, does not compromise on quality, and whose cans—incidentally—are among the most beautiful ones you can give as a gift.

The sardine is still a focal point for many port cities in Brittany, as well as in Spain and Portugal. It is not considered an endangered species.
