The “Ramon Peña” company, based in the Galician region of Ribadumia, can look back on a history spanning over 90 years: founded in 1920 by José Peña Oubiña in Cambados, Galicia, the company is now run by the third generation, led by Nely Concheiro. Its business is the production of premium canned fish and seafood from the Rías (fjords) of Galicia, made without additives and enjoyed worldwide. As the only company in its sector, it is protected by the “Pesca de Rías” brand, which guarantees the origin and quality of the product.

Ramon Peña’s stated goal is to inspire gourmets and restaurateurs around the world to rethink their choices. For this reason, only fresh, seasonal fish are used, and everything is done by hand except for sealing and labeling the cans. The combination of the finest ingredients, time-honored traditional recipes, and meticulous quality control results in products of the highest quality that are thoroughly convincing.

The squid family includes, for example, squid, octopuses, and cuttlefish. They are usually about 30 cm long and can weigh up to 5 kilos. In the kitchen, their delicate arms are particularly popular, as is the black ink the animals release when threatened. It can be used to color pasta or rice. Their meat is firm and lean and tastes delicious raw (e.g. as sushi), briefly cooked, pan-fried, grilled, or deep-fried.

The best mussels in Europe

Mussels from Galicia have been protected by a designation of origin since January 1, 2007 ("Mexillón de Galicia"). These mussels of the species Mytilus galloprovincialis are thus the first seafood product to be entitled to this European Union designation.
For several generations, Galician mussels have been farmed. The farms are concentrated in five large estuaries, the Rías Baixas.
This farming method is based on bateas, floating platforms attached to the seabed made of (mostly) eucalyptus wood with a side length of 25 m, which carry a maximum of 500 ropes with the mussel brood until they are ready for harvest. Since the mussels never come into contact with the seabed in this way, they are completely free of sand.
