The Sardinha de Lisboa is a special ceramic figure made by Bordallo Pinheiro. It is a tribute to the traditional Portuguese sardine, which plays an important role in Portuguese cuisine and is a symbol of the country's culture and identity.
"To be someone in a sea of people." The Sardinha Pessoana is Bordallo Pinheiro's tribute to Fernando Pessoa, Portugal's greatest modern poet. Inspired by verses from his work "Mensagem", this sardine bears Pessoa's unmistakable features – a poetic combination of a Portuguese icon and literary heritage.
Designed by Maria Miguel, each sardine is crafted in the earthenware factory in Caldas da Rainha founded in 1884 by Raphael Bordallo Pinheiro. The decoration is done by hand using the elaborate decal process – only a few pieces are produced per day. It is delivered in packaging with a newspaper look, a reminiscence of the traditional sardine sale in Lisbon since the 18th century.
